Necro post
So what is the official time length where a reply is considered a necro. Recently a cm stated that a month old post was a necro. So with that said is there a certain time period we can respond which would not be considered a necro? Just want to know the boundaries and forum etiquette. Thanks!

'Necroing' forum posts is generally a negative term only when the post is bumped for the sole purpose of bringing the topic back up to the front page. If you have a legit question or update to make to a thread then I think as long as the topic is still relevant--and it's the best and most current thread on that topic--then replying to it would not be considered a necro (for the purposes of moderation).

If we want our search feature to be used, we need to be able to understand and handle old threads being brought up again if someone has a new question on it, or relevant and constructive info to add to it.

Dunno why it's against the rules to begin with. Why keep fourteen-thousand pages of old threads unlocked if you didn't want people to reply to them? Just lock them. Done.

We considered implementing something like that, but as I said it's not that cut and dry. If there's a thread that's been ongoing for months, or even years, and every couple months someone finds it and has something relevant to add, that doesn't seem like it's necessarily a bad thing.

I'd say replying to a thread that is so old that it has past Community Managers on it is a pretty good sign that its a necro.
